Two weeks ago, Yasmin Seweid, an 18-year-old Muslim student at New York’s Baruch College, claimed she was approached by three drunk, menacing men while waiting for the uptown 6 train at 23rd Street in Manhattan at 10 p.m.
The police report she filed stated that the men screamed “Donald Trump! Donald Trump!”, followed the woman onto the train, and berated the young woman with racial epithets such as “You f***ing terrorist! Get out of this country!” and “You don’t belong here!”
The alleged victim stated that the men then ripped at her purse, breaking one of her purse straps, and tried unsuccessfully to remove her hijab while yelling, “Get that f***ing thing off your head!” Shocked and in fear for her life, she exited the subway at the Grand Central station and reported the harassment to the police.
There was one problem with her story, however. It was a lie.
Before filling in the blanks on the aftermath of that story, it’s worth taking a look at how the mainstream, liberal media covered the allegations — with wholesale blame of President-elect Donald Trump, his clearly-racist followers, and New Yorkers in general.
The Daily Beast’s Michael Dally put pen to paper to slam Trump supporters for their behavior, writing:
In New York, Heroes in Hijabs Face Trump-Loving Haters. As men chanting ‘Donald Trump! Donald Trump! Donald Trump!’ menaced a young girl, the New Yorkers who did nothing disgraced our city.
BuzzFeed, Yahoo News, Slate, and others were quick to jump on the bandwagon of assigning blame and investigating the root cause of such hate.
In a Facebook post after the event, Seweid wrote about her disappointment that nobody on the train intervened when the men started to attack her.
“It breaks my heart that so many individuals chose to be bystanders while watching me get harassed verbally and physically by these disgusting pigs,” she wrote.
“Trump America is real and I witnessed it first hand last night! What a traumatizing night,” she added.
Her father, Sayeed Seweid, 55, of New Hyde Park, said he was very angry that no bystander had stepped in to defend his daughter.
“Nobody even offered to help an 18-year-old girl,” he said. “That means something. Her phone was dying. You offer help. It doesn’t matter the race, religion, or the country.”
Shortly after her Facebook post, Yasmin Seweid was suddenly reported missing. Seweid recanted her story on Tuesday and is now being charged by authorities with filing a false report.
After investigators were unable to verify any of her allegations, Seweid reportedly admitted to making the incident up “because she was having issues with her family at home.”
Her father, Sayeed Seweid, responded to magazine DNAInfo upon hearing this news. “You try to raise your children as best you can … Maybe she was afraid that night. She was running late.”
